Young Person Survey 2012

Young Persons Survey 2012

Powys County Council would like your view as a young person about living in Powys and how you rate some
of the serivces that it provides. Some of you may see or use some services everyday like public transport or
street lighting. Some of you may use a service occasionally like a sports centre or youth club. Some of you
may never use or have any knowledge of a service provided - like information and advice services.

You can find the survey at http://surveys.powys.gov.uk/index.php?sid=11637&lang=en.

By "young person" we mean anyone aged between 11 - 25 years who lives in the county.
So if that's you please read on and complete our survey.

Why? The council provides hundreds of services - some pretty visible and obvious - like
schools, street lighting and libraries and others - less obvious - like support and care for
older people, road safety and running museums and galleries.

Every year we ask 1000 adults what they think about some of our services. This year we'd
like to hear from you too. Please answer as many questions as you can, and that are relevent
to you. If you don't use a particular service then just choose No Answer. In building this
survey we sought and received invaluable help from the Powys Youth Forum so hopefully
we've covered the key services and issues facing you as a young person. We hope you enjoy
completing the survey. As a thank you we are offering an Ipad as a prize for one lucky person
who completes the survey.

All data collected is confidential and will be held in compliance with the Data Protection Act.
The results will be seen by the Council's Management Team and used to help us understand
more about your view of life in Powys, the services we provide and how we can improve them.

The closing date for surveys to be submitted is Friday 23 November 2012.

All those who complete a survey and give their details will be entered into a prize draw
to win an Ipad.  Please see the final section of the survey for details and rules.

There are 31 questions in this survey.

Families with Disabled Children: Sleep Depreviation

The Family Fund recently reported in The Guardian on sleep deprivation for those families with disabled children.  They are now carrying out a parent survey to find out more about the extent of the issue.  The survey only has 5 questions, so should only take a few minutes for families to complete.

Consultation Events on Elective Home Education

The Welsh Government believe the current legislation surrounding elective home education has shortcomings because there is no legal requirement on the parent to tell a local authority that a child is receiving education at home.  Without this requirement, it is very difficult for local authorities to carry out their duties to ensure that all compulsory school age children in their area are receiving a suitable education.

For these reasons we are proposing the introduction of a registration and monitoring scheme for home educated children. We want the scheme to promote a more supportive and constructive relationship between all home educating families and local authorities, with them working together to ensure children receive a suitable education.

A consultation seeking views on the proposals is currently open and responses are requested by 23 November 2012.

In addition, a small number of facilitated events aimed at seeking the views of children and young people will be held on:

  • 18 October 2012 10:30 at Royal Welsh Showground, Powys
  • 26 October 2012 10:30 at All Nations Centre, Cardiff
  • 30 October 2012 10:30 at Conwy Business Centre, Conwy
These events are also open to adults.  Each event will last approximately two hour with light refreshments available on arrival.

To book a place at one of the events please email:

Mae Llywodraeth Cymru'n credu bod y ddeddfwriaeth gyfredol ynghylch addysg ddewisol yn y cartref yn ddiffygiol gan nad oes unrhyw ofyniad cyfreithiol ar y rhiant i ddweud wrth awdurdod lleol fod y plentyn yn derbyn gofal yn y cartref.  Heb y gofyniad hwn, mae'n anodd iawn i awdurdodau lleol gyflawni eu dyletswyddau i sicrhau bod plant oedran ysgol gorfodol yn eu hardal yn derbyn addysg briodol.

Am y rhesymau hyn, rydym yn cynnig cyflwyno cynllun cofrestru a monitro ar gyfer plant sy'n derbyn addysg yn y cartref. Rydym am i'r cynllun hyrwyddo perthynas fwy cefnogol ac adeiladol rhwng pob teulu sy'n rhoi addysg yn y cartref ac awdurdodau lleol er mwyn iddynt gydweithio i sicrhau bod plant yn cael addysg briodol.

Mae ymgynghoriad sy'n ceisio barn ar y cynigion yn digwydd ar hyn o bryd a gofynnir am ymatebion erbyn 23 Tachwedd 2012.

Yn ogystal, caiff nifer fechan o ddigwyddiadau  eu cynnal gyda'r nod o gael barn plant a phobl ifanc. Dyma'r manylion:

  • 18 Hydref 2012 10:30 ar Faes Sioe Frenhinol Cymru, Powys
  • 26 Hydref 2012 10:30 yng Nghanolfan yr Holl Genhedloedd, Caerdydd
  • 30 Hydref 2012 10:30 yng Nghanolfan Fusnes Conwy, Conwy

Bydd y digwyddiadau hyn hefyd yn agored i oedolion.  Bydd pob digwyddiad yn para tua dwy awr a bydd lluniaeth ysgafn ar gael wrth i chi gyrraedd.

I gadw lle yn un o'r digwyddiadau, anfonwch e-bost at:

Day Care Trust & Family/Parenting Institute to Merge

Family charities announce merger talks

July 25, 2012

LEADING charities the Family and Parenting Institute and Daycare Trust today announce their intention to merge.
The Boards of both organisations believe that they will be better able to improve the life chances of children and strengthen the quality of family life in the UK by pooling their resources and expertise.
Collectively, the charities have almost 40 years’ experience of policy and campaigning on issues affecting families.
Maggie Darling, Chair of Daycare Trust, said:
“This is an exciting opportunity to bring together the major strengths of both charities. In challenging times it is vital that we move forward together to make the UK a family friendly country where the social and economic benefits of high-quality and affordable childcare continue to be valued. I believe joining forces is the best way forward to serve our beneficiaries in the years to come.”
Christine Farnish, Chair of the Family and Parenting Institute, said:
“I am delighted that the Family and Parenting Institute and the Daycare Trust have committed to combine their respective strengths into a single charity, able to speak out powerfully on behalf of parents and families and promote the childcare agenda. Both Boards have recognised that we can achieve more by working together. We look forward to building the new organisation in partnership with the Daycare Trust.”
It is expected that further details of the merger will be announced later in the year.
